Where did this nickname come from?

Does anyone in canon ever call Aramis 'Mis'?

I don't remember it, and it's starting to feel really jarring in fic.

I don't think so. It's probably like 'Mione from HP fandom. I haven't run into it yet, but it sounds jarring indeed.

Hurt/Comfort

Who do you most like to see hurt and who to you prefer as comforter?

My hurtees are Athos, Porthos and d'Artagnan, in that order, and I admit to not being picky about comforters.

Spirit of the Prompt/Manner/Etc

Continued from prompt post

Defensive Anon here.

Personally, I found an anon who did not indicate that they were the OP coming in and saying "Not quite everything has to be all about d'Artagnan" pretty rude when someone was just making a suggestion. That's what made me feel defensive, along with someone saying that making an OT4 prompt about hurt!d'Artagnan was "twist[ing]" it.

If someone asks if the OP wants something, and the OP says no, and the author doesn't write it, fine, I've been all parties in that, but it seemed like a lot of general bemoaning hurt/woobie/OOC!d'Artagnan for one suggestion.

For those who like quick and dirty numbers, I just went back through a couple pages of the Delicious fills, and found:

Fic where the hurt (I'm interpreting this as where the focus of the fic is on the physical or emotional pain of one character as a main plot point/emotional beat, and yes, that's pretty subjective) person is:
No one 25
Athos 9
Aramis 8
d'Artagnan 8
Treville 3
Multiple 2
Constance 1
Porthos 1
Anne 1

Which mostly indicates that Porthos needs more fic?

The color blue. As soon as I see it, I think Athos. Not the musketeers in general because of their blue cloaks, but specifically Athos. Why is that, damn if I know. (It's not about the forget me nots, those just annoy me, I'm kind of not a fan of Milady)

So what weird everyday things remind you of the Musketeers?

From: [personal profile] raouldehadleyfraser
I was just asking the OP of that prompt if I /could/ put some d'Artagnan whump in there. Since when has there been a problem with asking for clarification, which is what I was doing. if they had said outright "no", I would have been fine with that and we could all have just gone about our day, alright? Surely you'd prefer that to my just not asking, right?

Seems to me that sometimes people forget that there are people with actual feelings behind the screens here.

Would red wine vomit stain the same way? And would it be dark red or purple?
From: (Anonymous)
If you're vomiting more or less as you finish drinking it's perhaps slightly paler in reverse, tastes bitter (stomach acids I guess), and yes, it stains... take it from me, never vomit red wine on a cream rug.

Query about money for a meme fill

From: (Anonymous)
When Constance was pretending to be a prostitute, she and the red guard quibbled about money.

Does any one here know anything about the currency of the day? What would be an acceptable amount for a prostitute to charge?

Re: Query about money for a meme fill

Date: 2014-04-15 04:26 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Google gave me this: http://1632.org/1632Slush/1632money.rtf

Using the above, I think our Musketeers probably have about 130 - 150 or so dernier left per week after paying for food, lodging, weapons, etc. (In the books they were sometimes rich and sometimes poor, seems to be the case here too.) Then I suppose Athos drinks and Porthos gambles, etc, leaving them with less than that.

Still not sure what a prostitute would have cost but guessing it depended a lot on how desperate you were for income. Let's guess at anything between bartering for dinner and wine to 20 dernier at most for a majority of them?

Beta Readers

Okay, so I've had enough of trying to beta-read my own stories. Is there anyone out there who's interested in exchanging beta-reading services?

Don't care if your story's gen, slash or het and my only trigger is character bashing. Grammar's not my strong point, but I'm fairly okay at sentence structure, formatting and making the story "flow". Also happy to offer opinions on characterization or just generally cheer you on in the writing process. In return, I'd love for someone to read through my crap before I post it. Grammar's probably the main issue, but I welcome feedback on anything which strikes you as wrong or weird.

If you're interested, please let me know! :)

On the spelling of d'Artagnan

Date: 2014-04-19 02:38 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Just a quick commentary:

Though I don't think I'm too much of a grammar hound, I have been gratified to see that many authors in this BBC 'verse do actually spell d'Artagnan correctly, with the lowercase "d" in front as it should be.

However, I find it interesting that not many seem to realize the "d" should still be capitalized when it appears at the beginning of a sentence.

For example:

"The others looked aghast as d'Artagnan fell from his horse."

Or,

"D'Artagnan came running, hoping he could help."

Or,

"D'Artagnan walked into the tavern to find his friends in the corner, safe and sound. Aramis waved, kicking out a chair as d'Artagnan made his way towards them."

---

For the record, it doesn't actually bother me all that much when I see it not done correctly, and it in no way reaches pet peeve level, but I thought I'd put it out there somewhere.

Books of the Time Period

Date: 2014-04-20 04:03 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
So, my knowledge of books that were popular before 1776 is not good (in case you didn't guess, it's because I live in an extremely narcissistic country and we only read authors of one nationality).

So because I do enjoy a bit of culture in fics, and someone mentioned somewhere Porthos name-dropping Nostradamus, it had me curious. What were people reading in Europe in this time period? Was it restricted to French authors? Novels? Non-fiction books about the world around them?

Re: Books of the Time Period

From: (Anonymous)
Keeping in mind that literacy was hardly universal, and only something like 10% of the population of France spoke French as their first language (that 10% being Paris and near by, and the upper classes generally, there were A LOT of regional either dialects or entirely separate languages).

It hasn't come up in the show, but Richelieu was big on arts and culture and sponsored a lot of authors and painters.

They were reading novels for sure. Epic romances that came out in many volumes were really popular, though they were starting to get a bit old fashioned by the show's period, and people were now reading parodies of epic romances that came out in many volumes.

Montaigne, a philosopher and essayist from the previous century, was still really popular (he's a good one because you can get him in English pretty easily, and all the romance novels not so much). Memoirs and collections of letters were also popular.

If you had a good (read: expensive) education, you'd know at least a little Latin, and probably would have read stuff like Plato, Virgil and Seneca. Greek and Roman classics (plays, poems, philosophy, histories) were also translated into French and were still widely read.

There were a lot of religious things to read, not the Bible as much, but lives of saints were popular, and some theology. I don't remember if Thomas Aquinas was in then or not, I think perhaps not. Erasmus was out. Sorry. I really don't know counter-Reformation theologians well.

Stuff was coming in from abroad, either in translation, or written in Latin in the first place. Shakespeare wasn't widely read until fifty years later, but you'd be getting some of the scientific works from Francis Bacon and William Harvey (mentioned in the show). I don't know if they would have been translated into French though, or everyone just would have read the Latin.

Treason/Hanging

From: (Anonymous)
Legally speaking, did it count as treason to sleep with the Queen, and what would the punishment have been? (though obviously the punishments might have varied depending on rank)

Re: Treason/Hanging

From: (Anonymous)
My expertise is in Medieval England, but I'm pretty sure that sleeping with a Queen Consort was treason and punishable by death (as treason always is iirc). If you got her pregnant it would be a non-royal kid on the throne, I think was the reason? Which... doesn't apply to anyone on the show at all... *coughcoughARAMIScough*

Character Play Lists

Date: 2014-04-24 01:29 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
So, I'm curious what songs you all might include in various character's playlists. Songs that remind you of them or their stories for whatever reason.

And, I'll start. :)

For whatever reason "Dreams of Cannibalism" by Typhoon makes me think of Aramis. (Of note, the song is not actually about cannibalism).

"Killing For Love" by Jose Gonzalez makes me think of Athos (though elements of it could totally work for Aramis also).

And probably for some out there and bizarre reasons "Flume" by Bon Iver makes me think of Porthos.

Mademoiselle Juliette by Alizee always makes me think of Aramis, so... there's that...

He was never given one in the book, but the historical character he was based on was named Jean-Armand, if you wanted to use that.

17th century lube?

Date: 2014-04-24 08:33 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I need an idea for something that could be used for lube that might be found in the musketeers garrison. Specifically, Treville's office. Would they have had sandalwood oil or olive oil hanging around? Is there anything else that a small pot of grease might have been used for ie: cleaning a weapon?

Re: 17th century lube?

Date: 2014-04-24 10:17 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Oil for looking after swords and pistols, yes. You would also use oil for looking after all that bloody leather. Treville's office seems to open onto the armoury, so I think you're good to go on any of the above.

Arse, Ass, or buttocks?

Date: 2014-04-30 11:27 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I'm aware that I may be courting controversy here, but what do you personally prefer to read in a slash story - the word arse, ass or the more formal buttocks?

Also, this is more just out of curiosity, are there words that you definitely do/don't like?

Is there a word that would actually make you stop reading?

I know it's very much a personal choice thing, and therefore pretty subjective. Like I said, I'm really just curious.

I think I've become less bothered as I've got older. I used to flinch from 'hole' and 'rigid members'. I still struggle if it starts throbbing!

These days I'm more likely to think twice about persevering with a story if the author starts referring to somebody by their hair colour. I guess that's a personal bugbear.

Re: Arse, Ass, or buttocks?

Date: 2014-04-30 12:28 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
For my part I tend to prefer ass over buttocks and buttocks over arse when it comes to fic. Where I'm from 'arse' is usually used as a mild explicit (ex: "pain in the arse", etc.), usually by a teenager, and thus tends to read as juvenile to me. I know that might seem silly to some but it's actually quite jarring to me.

As for words that tend to make me stop reading (and continuing on the same line as your original question), if the author gets too friendly with the word 'anus', I'm done. It might be technically correct but I'd rather not feel like I'm reading about someone's prostate exam.
