Gen Crack? The little guy isn't that little

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
So I've seen a lot of fics referring to Athos looking down at d'Artagnan, and d'Artagnan being described pretty much as the shortest one of the group.

Luke, and therefore d'Artagnan, is almost 6"2. Two inches taller than Athos and Aramis, who're both 6". I haven't been able to find out how tall Howard is, but in pictures next to Luke, Tom and Santiago (ones where they aren't strategically placed to make Luke look shorter) he's similar height to/not that much taller than Luke, I'm thinking an inch?

My point is, I'd love to see Athos or Aramis (or Porthos for that matter) make a short joke or fondly call d'Artagnan 'little one' and then realise... hang on, I'm looking at your chin/nose where are your eyes- Oh they're up there (in Porthos' case, wait a minute I'm looking you in the eyes this is weird I usually have to look down at people to do this...)

Bonus points if d'Artagnan usually slouches, and that combined with his lither form, makes him appear much shorter and smaller until he straightens his back

Fill: Little One

Whelp, boy, pup, son, colt, young-one, little brother, farm-boy, Gascon…

As the youngest and newest Musketeer in the garrison, d’Artagnan appeared to be the prime candidate for a whole host of nicknames. They were meant fondly, of course, as d’Artagnan got along well with all the Musketeers in the garrison, but despite d’Artagnan’s every attempt to shake the reputation as the ‘young one’, the nicknames stuck.

And where did those nicknames start? Well with his supposed ‘best friends’ of course. d’Artagnan had finally accepted his fate that as long as The Inseparables were around, the nicknames would keep coming. And that was fine, most of the time, and he actually quite liked being called a couple of the names by his brothers in arms. Like the time Athos called him ‘son’. That was something d’Artagnan would never ever get over.

There was one nickname though, that he really did not understand. Aramis, Athos and Porthos had all, on numerous occasions, called d’Artagnan ‘little’. It wasn’t so much when then called him ‘little brother’, because that was in reference to his age, but it was when it was used in reference to his height that it irritated d’Artagnan. Being called ‘little guy’ and ‘little one’ got on his nerves most of all because, he was in fact, taller than both Athos and Aramis.
He wasn’t sure whether the other men had actually noticed this and were choosing to ignore it, or they honestly just had not realised that d’Artagnan had at least a couple of inches on them.

So d’Artagnan decided that the next time one of them chose to call him it, he would call him out on it.

He finally got his chance one morning as he sat finishing his breakfast with Porthos and Athos. Aramis had been in Treville’s office, speaking with him about what they had been assigned to do for the day. The other man emerged into the early sunshine, setting his hat on his head as he descended the stairs and walked towards them.

“Come along, little one.” Aramis called him as he reached them, “We have a letter to deliver.”

d’Artagnan did not look up from his breakfast, pulling his bread roll apart. He knew the others were giving each other looks over his head when he did not react.
d’Artagnan finally looked up at them when Porthos cleared his throat beside him. “I’m sorry.” d’Artagnan said to Aramis, pretending to be bewildered that they were all watching him, “Were you talking to me?”

Aramis’ brow creased in confusion. “Yes.”

“Oh.” d’Artagnan said nonchalantly, turning to Athos, “I thought he was talking to you.”

Athos’ mouth dropped open a moment before he recovered, “He said ‘little one’.”

“Oh I know.” d’Artagnan said, “But you are the smallest one sitting at the table, so I thought…”

“Excuse me?” Aramis cut in incredulously.

d’Artagnan tried to reign in a laugh and looked up at Aramis with a quirk of his eyebrow – something he had picked up from Athos – “Well, I am, in fact, taller than you. Didn’t you know?”

Porthos erupted into laughter.

Aramis was less amused, gaping at him, before scoffing, “You are not taller than me and Athos.”

“I am.” d’Artagnan said, standing up from the table, “We can find out right now, if you like.”

"Fine." Aramis agreed confidently, "Up you get, Athos."

“Is this really necessary?” Athos asked exasperatedly.

“Why?” Porthos asked him with a glint in his eye, “Are you worried the boy is right?”

d'Artagnan smirked as Athos sent Porthos a glare before climbing to his feet. By the time Porthos and Athos had rounded the table, d'Artagnan was standing face-to-face with Aramis, who was shaking his head with a frown. “This cannot be right.”

Aramis appeared to be, just as d’Artagnan had suspected, a couple of inches shorter, so was looking at d’Artagnan’s nose when head-on rather than into d’Artagnan’s eyes.

Aramis looked at Athos in surprise, “He is taller than us.”

Athos stood beside Aramis with a confused frown and whilst doing so, proving that they were of the same height, and therefore also shorter than d’Artagnan.

Porthos laughed loudly, “Well I’ll be damned.” He grinned, turning d’Artagnan and stepping up to him. He held out a hand as though to test the height difference between him and d’Artagnan, “He’s not that much shorter than me.”

d'Artagnan bit his tongue to try and halt his triumphant laugh, and failed.

“How can this be?!” Aramis demanded furiously. “How have we missed this?”

“He must slouch.” was Athos’ sudden response.

d’Artagnan glared at him defensively. “I do not!”

“That must be it.” Aramis latched on. “You do slouch a lot!”

“Well, thanks.” d’Artagnan huffed. He was going to make sure that he did not slouch so much in future, if only to continue to irritate the two older, yet definitely smaller, men.

“And he is skinnier than we are.” Aramis clicked his fingers. “That must be a factor, also.”

Athos sent an assessing eye up and down d’Artagnan’s body. “Yes, I suppose it must.”

d’Artagnan frowned, but not allowing his moment of glory to be taken from him so easily, countered, “Say all you like, but the skinny ‘boy’ is still taller than the both of you.”

Porthos grinned, clapping d’Artagnan on the shoulder. “They are just put-out, d’Artagnan, don’t listen to them. Their masculinity has taken a hit.” Porthos was clearly enjoying himself immensely. He sent d’Artagnan a wink before making a cooing noise and reaching out to pat Athos and Aramis’ heads.

Aramis ducked, scowling, whilst Athos stood there and watched the hand descend on his head as though he could not quite believe that Porthos was daring to mock him.

“Adorable little angry men.” Porthos grinned, wrapping an arm around d’Artagnan’s shoulders whilst d’Artagnan laughed at the identical glares that were being sent their way. Porthos turned his head, his height allowing him to speak into d’Artagnan’s ear, “Shall we leave the little men to stew a while?”

“Actually, d’Artagnan and I have work to do, remember?” Aramis declared, and with a triumphant upper-hand smile he ordered, “Come along whelp.”

d’Artagnan shared a knowing grin with Porthos before saying “Lead the way, little one."

Bwahaha, this was amazing! I have this lovely mental image of a baffled Athos who is just WATCHING Porthos' hand come closer to patting him on the head, but not doing anythin to stop it. It's such a lovely "I can't believe this!"-image, and I'll treasure it always. And the last couple of sentences was pure gold! Well done!

Well, d'Artagnan wears no hat - he loses so many inches that way.
