um, why?

From: (Anonymous)
Why do we have a fill-post for the free-for-all prompts if nobody uses it? Or, to rephrase the question: Why do people filling prompts from the free-for-all entry post their fills in the general fill list?

Re: um, why?

From: (Anonymous)
I think just give it a little time. There haven't been a ton of fills from the free for all prompt post yet, and some fills that are ongoing on the freeforall haven't been listed in either fill post as of yet. Plus, fillers can still post it in the warnings-required fill post if they want to add warnings to the post. It's an option, not a mandate. But is an option I like having around.

Also, the mod explained it was easier to moderate warnings/no warning fill posts that way.

Infected wounds in the 17th century

Date: 2014-08-12 09:00 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Once again, I'm back with a historical question which pertains to a fic I'm writing. I've noticed that it's quite common in Musketeers fandom to have characters worrying about, or reacting to, a wound becoming infected.

However, it occurred to me after I'd written such a scene that this can't be right. The germ theory of disease had been posited before the 1630s, but it was not widely accepted. So to have a common soldier say in fic that a wound is "infected" is anachronistic.

What I'm wondering is how to write the same dialogue correctly. I thought about having the wound be described as "septic", but I think that still implies infection with living organisms.

I am completely stumped as to alternate language. All I could come up with is the wound "rotting", which both sounds awful, and isn't correct anyway.

Halp?

Maybe fester or putrefy? They did talk about pus and the fear of 'spasm' after being injured (tetanus), even back in medieval times.

I wouldn't worry too much about being precise with the language though. The series doesn't :)

church info required for time period

Date: 2014-08-21 07:07 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Have tried hunting around for this info. But without any luck.

Does anyone here know how many small churches there would be in Paris during this period? I'm thinking specifically around the Court of Miracles, but all of Paris would do. Also, were they called churches or chapels, and who would have been in charge of each one, a priest? Would lay people have helped with the upkeep, and would there have been a poor box or alms box in each one? Sorry for the long list!

Good questions, not being Catholic myself (though my grandmother was) I've kind of been wondering the same things for a fic I've had on my mind.

Porthos opinion question

Date: 2014-08-27 03:53 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I'm working on a potential fill for a prompt, but I need some input. Porthos is such a grounded, solid, strong character in my mind, I'm curious to get some opinions on what his insecurities and weaknesses might be, particularly ones that might not be obvious.

I know he gambles, and cheats at gambling. In commodities, it showed he lets his emotions drive him at times - though that's true for any of the boys in the right (or wrong) circumstances, and I can't imagine any man in his position in that episode not having their rage pushed over the edge. In Homecoming he actually seemed pretty secure in the idea that his brothers wouldn't abandon him even if he was condemned to death.

Any less obvious weaknesses/insecurities anyone can think of for him?

Re: Porthos opinion question

Date: 2014-08-27 12:13 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I think, as you pointed out, they all have displayed vulnerability when their pasts collide with their present circumstances. As Aramis said in Homecoming, Porthos is a little "touchy" about having been raised in the court of miracles. I can see Porthos being insecure about that/letting his emotions get the best of him if that vulnerability is jabbed at or played upon.

I think Porthos displays a vulnerability when opportunities come along he maybe never imaged having as a child. Which is why I think Bonnaire's idea to go to the colonies and make something of himself was passingly entertained in Porthos's mind, and why marrying Alice might have been an appealing idea to him.

Looking for a fic

Date: 2014-09-06 06:06 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I know this isn't a fic finder, but I read a fic a while back - it was a one-shot I'm pretty sure, and now I can't find it again.

In it, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis were close to death and decided to tell each other their real names - though I'm pretty sure it wasn't a death fic. It kind of blended book and show-verse, though leaned a little more toward book-verse if I remember right. Yet, it was still in the Show-Verse section at AO3 or fanfic-dot-net, I'm sure of it.

Anyone know the one I'm talking about and where to find it?

Prompt Search- D'Artagnan Hugs his Friends

I vaguely recollect seeing a prompt requesting something along the lines of D'Artagnan comforting his friends by hugging them/though physical contact, but I can't remember any specifics. Does anyone have any inkling of what prompt this might be?

Fic Discussion

I'm not trying to cause trouble here or bash any creative works; I just want to discuss the underlying tone of a fic. Specifically, this one:

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1786657/chapters/4869144

What's your opinion of the fic's attitude toward the character of Kitty in the fifth chapter, before it's revealed that she wants to help the Musketeers? Am I the only one who finds it a little bit. . . uncomfortable?

what inspires you to read/write slash?

Date: 2014-10-04 09:59 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I know this is very subjective, but I would be interested in reading other people's thoughts. I read two comments recently, one an interesting tumblr post which pointed out the potential equality of a slash relationship. The other a comment on a het story that condemned all slash readers and writers as obsessive straight women who couldn't bear the thought of the object of their obsession being with another woman, so they put them with another man. (I had to breathe deeply for a while to resist the urge to comment back what I personally thought of that theory.) They even claimed that some research had been done that backed this idea up. Now I identify as demisexual. I enjoy reading and writing slash, but I have no desire for the characters or actors beyond their interactions with others. I am happy if I hear that they are in happy in their real life relationships, I don't sit around cutting their life partners out of photos! I think I agree with the tumblr post on several levels, although I think I was also drawn to the idea of a love so strong it surpasses what the world/others might think of it. Thoughts any one?

A distressing lack of (what I consider) interesting female characters in media. For the shows where the female characters appeal to me I read and/or write write het, femslash, threesomes, etc. It's the quality of the writing that makes a story readable to me, not the gender or sexuality of the main characters.

Though maybe by choosing not to write more about women I'm contributing to the problem...

A Proposal Regarding the AO3 Situation

Date: 2014-10-07 05:46 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
So, I've had an idea. Please tell me what you all think.

What if we got the brilliant Anon who wrote the bad!porn parody in the AO3 kudos thread above to write a very short story-- maybe a modern AU-- where the characters are discussing the ease with which kudo counts can be inflated on AO3 and how they've had to scroll past a couple of appallingly bad stories to get to the real stuff in the Musketeers section when sorting by kudos. (It wouldn't have to be the same Author!Anon as before, obviously; it's just that they were brilliant and I love them for that little piece.)

Someone could register a brand new AO3 account for the sole purpose of posting that single fic, which I really think should be titled "Public Service Announcement" or something similar. Then we shower it with kudos and get it to the top of the list. (It would be utterly awesome if there were enough people in the fandom to do so legitimately, but, y'know, whatever.)

Aside from keeping an eye on it to keep it above the other stuff, that would pretty much be it. We could disable comments (I think?) to eliminate that aspect of potential drama, and while a certain person would probably try to report it to AO3, I don't believe anything about it would violate the TOS since they don't care about inflated kudos.

Thoughts? I'd be willing to do some or even most of the legwork on this.

Prompt freeze?

Date: 2014-10-13 02:05 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
What do people people think about trying a prompt freeze? I'm not sure what the general requirements are for one on this meme. Is there an established fill < prompt ratio threshold?

Re: Prompt freeze?

Date: 2014-10-13 02:23 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Not the Mod, obviously.

If memory serves, there has been one prompt freeze with an associated "fill-a-thon" since the meme started.

I'm not personally a big fan of prompt freezes, but it's not a very passionately held position one way or the other in my case. I think most of what you're seeing is the natural waning of interest in a small fandom several months after the end of one season and before the airing of the next. I have actually been very pleasantly surprised that the activity level here and on AO3 has stayed as high as it has.

Ok, just shocked myself by doing a quick tally of all the prompts I have posted on this meme. It is way more than I thought I had, and kinda embarrassed at the amount (not telling unless coerced by some dashing Musketeers :)

Please tell me I am not alone in these multiple prompts and possibly being slightly obsessed with these guys.

Thanks :)
From: (Anonymous)
Awww that's sweet. I've never posted a prompt but I've written a few stories from these prompts so I want to say thank you! It's people like you that help give me ideas. You should keep posting as many as you like, I only wish I could fill them all for you.

I wish there was a way I could see a list of unfilled prompts from the past but I'm not sure how. I guess I could try and match fills with prompts but it sounds very time-consuming.

What encourages you to fill a prompt?

From: (Anonymous)
Exactly what the title says. And alternatively, what discourages you?

Re: What encourages you to fill a prompt?

From: (Anonymous)
Discouragements:

Smilie faces in prompts or subject lines. It looks incredibly insincere and passive-aggressive.

Long lists of "musts" for the fill at the very end of the prompt. If you're using the standard kink meme format for posting prompts, readers should already have a clear idea of what you're looking for. Calling them "musts" adds an unnecessary layer of entitlement to your prompt that can easily be avoided, and then including a list of half dozen things that you haven't already mentioned makes the prompt look restrictive and picky.

Prompts that go over two hundred words. I can understand if you need to add some historical info or something similar, but otherwise, I'll be wondering why you don't just write the fic yourself if you want it to be so specifically detailed.

People treating headcanon or fanon like it's canon. Enough said.

Canon or fanon thread

Date: 2014-10-23 01:51 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Place to ask if something is canon or fanon.

I'll go first. Admittedly, I've only just finished the fourth episode, but does the idea that the Inseparables are Treville's favorite Musketeers have any basis in canon? Or it is just one of those things where it's assumed that since they're the protagonists, the lives of all other characters revolve around them?

Re: Canon or fanon thread

Date: 2014-10-23 05:01 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I tend to think of the Three as Treville's lieutenants, and I think that's what the show seems to be suggesting through directing choices. They probably have seniority anyway; Aramis would very likely be among the most senior of the currently serving musketeers, and I think Athos and Porthos likely weren't far behind.

Is it just me or . . .

From: (Anonymous)
Does anyone else get the feeling that A LOT of the prompts being posted for the past few weeks are being posted by one particular person?

I can very easily (and inadvertently) keep track of this person's kinks through their posting style. And I feel really uncomfortable that I know so much about their preferences. It's an anon meme, but I know almost just as much about them as I would if it weren't. Gah, it's just so weird- I kind of feel like I'm reading their diary or something, and I really don't want to be.

Are you talking about the long d'Artagnan prompts? Passively, I've noticed a trend with those, but I have to be in a very specific mood to read d'Artagnan sagas, so I haven't been paying that close attention or reading them. Truthfully, I probably wouldn't be able to tell if it were the same person anyway.

bringing it up decades

How about bringing the story up a few decade...

Say to the later Louis the Sun King has just died, Louis the Beloved is under the thumb of a regent (Philip II Duke of Orleans).

Or to the days before the Revolution - the Three Musketeers verses the Count of Cagliastro.

Posting to AO3 & Fanfic

So kinda new to this whole scenario and was just wondering:

Do people prefer anon authors to repost their work on the other sites if they've got AO3 or Fanfic accounts?

Thanks

For me, I just like it when fillers post their fills to at least the fill post so I can find them, even if it's a slow wip, I like to check them out and know they're there and they can be hard to find otherwise.

For AO3 or Fanfic, I think that really is more up to the author than the readers. Many fills do get posted at AO3, and I've heard there is a way to post anonymously on AO3 for kink memers who want to keep their work anon there as it is here. I haven't seen many fills posted at fanfic, but there have been a few and, really I don't check that site out very much.

For some reason, I can't remember for the life of me what d'Artagnan was doing in this episode. I remember the three at the trial and escorting ninon to the trial location and doing other things, but where was d'Artagnan at this time? I know the writers had to have him not there because he would have recognized Milady, I just can't remember what they had him doing instead. I have the eps but my dvd player is broken. Please, someone?

Modern AU Aramis's playlist

Date: 2014-11-19 06:03 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I'm writing a modern au fic where Athos is going through Aramis's music selections and trying to get a handle on his personality. I'm thinking he's got an eclectic mix. Illapu and Blitzen Trapper and Rosanna and Nina Simone. Danay Suarez, Olmeca -- maybe Los Rakas. Maybe Typhoon or The Civil Wars. And, eh, more club music? (which is not really my thing so I've got nothing, but I think it would be Aramis's thing) Thoughts? Suggestions?

Re: Modern AU Aramis's playlist

Date: 2014-11-19 09:38 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Sounds like a fic I'd read. It kinda depends on the background and origin you're giving Aramis, I guess, but I'd love to see him have a small classic vinyl collection. With Edith Piaf and such. Plus stacks of old-school mixed cassette tapes (like he's the kind of guy who's kept all the music he's ever owned in whatever form he owned it and he keeps it all in a specific room in his house, or just has cupboards and drawers full of it, right alongside his iPod). So he's got like jane's addiction and nirvana and the rolling stones, and then Bon Iver and Animal Collective along with Rodriguez and Caravan Palace. And Athos can either see each music phase he went through or just come away thinking wtf?

Aramis' scars question

Date: 2014-11-20 02:48 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I've noticed that Aramis has some small scars right around the outside of his right eye.

Are these part of the scars he would have received from the Savoy massacre or would that one have been further into up in his hairline? In the pics from that ep it looks like he's got blood around that area where the scars are, but the bandage is further up. So maybe, some visible scars around his eye, as well as one further up?

I'm pretty sure they're all from Savoy. The scars around his eye are right where the bloody marks are on his face when he's watching Marsac walk throw down his pauldron.

Tho, I think there's got to be additional injury/injuries up further on his head because the bandage is covering something and it isn't covering those two scars. I always think of it as being those two scars and then that he must have had a pretty significant gash/gashes up by his temple or in his hair.

Series2 Interviews

Hmm--surprisingly active over here today, so I'll pose a question of my own. Have there been interviews with the main actors specific to series 2? I've read the producer/writer interviews, etc., but haven't seen any others. Just want to check I've not missed anything.

I don't think you have. I haven't seen any yet and I haunt the internet for stuff pretty regularly.

The Inseparables 3 not 4

Date: 2014-12-02 12:59 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Ive noticed that in most fics d'Artagnan is included when it comes to the 'Inseparables', the four, and I find myself always frowning a bit. I grant you ahead of time that its probably an odd thing to fixate on.

Personally, d'Artagana is my least fav character out of the books and even the many film incarnations, though I enjoy Luke Pasqualino's portrayal and its probably my fav so far. And please don't get me wrong, its not that I dislike the character, he's just not my fav and when it comes to the other three I totally see them as all but having adopted him. Exceping and thinking of him as one of their own and a true brother, but the reason I don't include him as one of the 'Inseparables' is that he will be moving on and supposedly surpassing them to become 'the Greatest Musketeer'. Its clear because of his time with them helped mold and sharpen him later, and there's no doubt that its a true and clear love shared between them, even after he moves past them (as seen in the books).

Yet Athos, Porthos and Aramis will always be the famed unit of three, the 'Inseparables', even when they are no longer Musketeers and have gotten married, had a kid and so on and so fourth.
I'm truly curious if I'm the only one who feels like this, that its the 'Three Inseprables'? Or should it truly be The Four Inseparables?

You've probably read the books more recently than I have, but I was of the impression that it referred to the four of them after d'Artagnan joined the unit properly.

Actually poking through the books is ambiguous. The the free English translation, the phrase is only used four times:

Athos says in the duel scene where they first meet: "Doubtless! Are you not aware that we are never seen one without the others, and that we are called among the Musketeers and the Guards, at court and in the city, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, or the Three Inseparables? And yet, as you come from Dax or Pau--"

then later when they're buddies, but d'Artagnan isn't a musketeer yet, a descriptive paragraph seems to imply all four of them are included: On their side, the three Musketeers were much attached to their young comrade. The friendship which united these four men, and the need they felt of seeing another three or four times a day, whether for dueling, business, or pleasure, caused them to be continually running after one another like shadows; and the Inseparables were constantly to be met with seeking one another, from the Luxembourg to the Place St. Sulpice, or from the Rue du Vieux-Colombier to the Luxembourg.

BUT! There's this bit from the Cardinal's PoV after d'Artagnan is a Musketeer that seems not to include him, though it could just mean that the general perception is still that they're three: At ten paces from the hedge he recognized the talkative Gascon; and as he had already perceived that these men were Musketeers, he did not doubt that the three others were those called the Inseparables; that is to say, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis.

The term is used only once in Twenty Years After, which again seems to include all four of them (as Athos has invited them all to dinner): The second interview between the former musketeers was not so formal and threatening as the first. Athos, with his superior understanding, wisely deemed that the supper table would be the most complete and satisfactory point of reunion, and at the moment when his friends, in deference to his deportment and sobriety, dared scarcely speak of some of their former good dinners, he was the first to propose that they should all assemble around some well spread table and abandon themselves unreservedly to their own natural character and manners--a freedom which had formerly contributed so much to that good understanding between them which gave them the name of the Inseparables.

No mention in Ten Years Later. Though other translations probably read differently, and my French isn't up to looking in the originals. Besides which, after the first book, ALL of them split up and don't keep and touch particularity, so it's not just that d'Artagnan stays with the Musketeers and the other three all move to Belgium and form a group marriage without him.

Idk, once d'Artagnan joins, he's pretty much inseparable from them, and they seem to like him as much as he likes them, so I don't see why he shouldn't be included in the term. However, I like him quite a bit, so that probably colors my opinion.
